Which systems are primarily connected to a clock spring?

The clock spring is a key component of the steering system of a car. It is mainly connected to the following core system, which provides signal transmission and safety functions:

 

1.Airbag System


Core features: The clock spring is the sole electrical signal channel between the main airbag (steering wheel airbag) and the vehicle control module (ECU). In the event of a collision, it ensures the airbag is deployed precisely in milliseconds to protect the driver.
Signal transmission: It transmits trigger signal through a flexible flat cable (FFC) to maintain electrical continuity during steering wheel rotation to prevent wires from tangling or snapping.

 

2.Steering Wheel Multifunction Control System
Function Integration: Hyundai vehicles often incorporate cruise control control, volume adjustment, voice control, Bluetooth phones and other buttons on the steering wheel. The clock spring is responsible for transmitting the electrical signals of these buttons to the appropriate control modules,such as the audio system and cruise control module.
Interface Protocol: It must be compatible with signal protocols from different vehicle models,such as CAN bus and LIN bus, to ensure accurate command execution.

3.Turn Signal and Horn System
Basic features: In some models, steering handles and horn button signals are also transmitted to the body control module via a clock spring, causing the steering signal to blink or horn to activate.
Redundant design: To ensure reliability, some models use independent wiring harnesses to transmit signals in parallel with clock springs, but clock springs remain one of the main channels.

 

4. Vehicle Network Communication System (Optional)
Advanced features: Clock springs can be integrated into an Ethernet or high-speed CAN bus interface for models with Level 2 and above autonomous driving capabilities, support real-time data transmission such as steering wheel angle sensors and force feedback motors, and assist vehicle dynamic control.

Flexible Structure: This design uses helical springs or flexible cables to allow the steering wheel to rotate freely (usually ±720°) without damaging the wiring harness.
Durability: Must be able to withstand more than 100,000 rotation cycles to ensure no signal attenuation or poor contact during long-term use.
Safety certification: complies with ISO 26262 (Functional Safety) and other standards to prevent mismatch or failure of airbags due to clock spring malfunction.
Real-world application scenarios
Repair case: If the clock spring is damaged, it can cause a wheel buttons to malfunction, airbag warning lights to come on, or signals to go off and on.
Modifications to note: When replacing a non-original clock spring, it is necessary to verify that it supports the original vehicle function (such as a multifunction keystroke protocol); otherwise, additional programming or replacement modules are required.
