Clock springs are an important electric rotary joint in a car's safety system and are usually installed in the area below the steering wheel. Specifically, it is a steering shaft fixed near a combination switch or column metal structure. This position ensures the stability of the electrical connection as the steering wheel rotates.
The unit uses a flexible flat cable and rotating housing to maintain electrical components such as airbags and horn horn switch continuity as the steering wheel turns left and right. Its mounting position must meet two core conditions: first, it must be mechanical synchronization with the steering mechanism; and second, it must provide sufficient rotation space for the wiring harness to prevent tensile breakage. A typical installation method is to bolt it to the top of the steering column and use a center pin or locking block for initial positioning.
Strict operating procedures must be followed when removing or replacing clock springs during vehicle maintenance: First, adjust the steering wheel to a straight position and fix the steering mechanism. Then, disconnect the negative electrode battery terminal to prevent an electrical short circuit. During remounting, make sure the clock spring is in the middle, i.e., has the same allowable rotation value in both directions; otherwise, the wiring harness may tire prematurely or airbag system may fail. The choice of installation location reflects the comprehensive consideration of space utilization, electrical safety and maintenance convenience in automobile engineering.
