Clock spring, as a key component in the automotive electrical system, is mainly used to connect the vehicle's steering wheel with various electrical devices, such as airbags, horns, multi-function buttons, etc.
1. Horn does not sound
The clock spring is an important part of the horn circuit. If the clock spring is damaged, it may cause the horn circuit to be interrupted, making the horn unable to work properly. When you press the horn button, if you can't hear the horn sound or the horn sound is abnormal, then this may be a clear sign of clock spring failure.
2. Airbag fault light is on
The airbag system relies on the clock spring to maintain the stability of the electrical connection. When the clock spring fails, it may affect the normal operation of the airbag system and cause the airbag fault light to light up. This warning light is usually located on the dashboard. If it suddenly lights up, then you should immediately check whether there is a problem with the clock spring.
3. Multi-function steering wheel button failure
The steering wheel of modern cars is usually equipped with a variety of function buttons, such as volume control, phone answering, cruise control, etc. The signal transmission of these buttons also depends on the clock spring. When the clock spring fails, these buttons may lose response or function abnormally. If you find that the buttons on the steering wheel are not working properly, the clock spring may be the source of the problem.
4. Steering angle sensor failure
In some models, the clock spring is also associated with the steering angle sensor. The steering angle sensor is used to detect the turning angle of the steering wheel and send a signal to the vehicle's control system. If the clock spring is damaged, it may affect the normal operation of the steering angle sensor and cause related vehicle control system failures, such as ESP (Electronic Stability Program) failure.
5. Abnormal noise or vibration
When the flexible flat cable or connector inside the clock spring is damaged, it may produce abnormal noise or vibration when the steering wheel is turned. This sound usually comes from under the steering wheel or inside the dashboard. If you hear such a sound, you should immediately check whether there is a problem with the clock spring.
6. Fault code
The diagnostic system of modern cars is usually able to detect the failure of the clock spring and store the corresponding fault code in the vehicle's control unit. If you use a fault diagnostic instrument to check the vehicle and find a fault code related to the clock spring, then this further confirms that there may be a problem with the clock spring.
