How It Works

Structure:

A clock spring consists of a flat, ribbon-like cable (or multiple cables) wound in a spiral pattern within a protective housing. This spiral design allows the cable to expand and contract as the steering wheel turns.

The housing is typically mounted to the steering column, while the center of the spiral connects to the steering wheel, allowing it to rotate freely.

 

Electrical Continuity:

As the steering wheel is turned, the spiral cable unwinds or winds up, maintaining a constant electrical connection between the stationary and rotating parts.
